Should the on street parking time limit in your area be 1P or 2P?

Council is not proposing to change existing on street time limits.
If you think they should change we’d like to hear from you.

Pay parking in Footscray will remain from 8am to 6pm seven days a week.

  1. Doesn't make any difference... the existing limits are never enforced in my area anyway

  2. 2 hours - 1 hour is not enough time to get your shopping done/go to the library/have a meal, or any combination of the three. (And heaven help you if your doctor's running late and you're in a 1 hour spot!)

  3. Hi Aimee
You can park for more than three hours for a fee in Footscray Market multideck and the Footscray Plaza multideck carpark. Your comment and others is covered in the FAQs section on this site.

  4. Seeing as the council are increasing the amount of pay parking will they be reducing rates?

  5. 2 hours, the current 1 hour is not enough to go for a sit down meal and do a bit of grocery shopping. The Footscray Plaza carpark is a nightmare in terms of access and getting in and out, ie 2 goods lifts going at snail pace and a neverending ramp doesn't really ease users access.

  6. Typical from an out of touch council! Footscray doesn't need more parking meters that's the reason shoppers have stopped going there. It's about time this council stopped thinking about revenue raising and exuberant pay packages and started to think about what the people really need at a time when the cost of living is at it's most difficult.

  7. Footscray has a range of transports options, the car should surely recieve the lowest priority.

The excuse of needing to do your grocery shopping and carry take everything home is not valid...seeing you are in a car it would be easy enough to drive to another nearby shopping centre with better on-site parking.

  8. 2 hours FREE parking should be the go. Surely the council gets enough money from our rates!! Or, as another comment above - are our rates going to be reduced due to more parking revenue?? Afterall revenue is reason why council is considering more paid parking. And why should one have to pay for Sunday?? But doesn't really bother me - I have stopped going into Footscray. Prefer to drive to other areas where I can park for free for 2-3 hours. Now I just need to find another dentist and doctor.

  9. 2 hours is needed. I went to see if the Kmart Tyre centre was open on Saturday and entered the multi-deck. It was closed but still had to pay as if I had parked. What a joke.

  10. Revenue from paid parking forms part of Council's budget. This year Council will spend over 1.3 million in Footscray on projects including:
    • CCTV safety cameras
    • Footscray at night lighting
    • Leeds Street upgrade
    • Byron Street car park upgrade
    • Footscray cleansing team
    • Greening Footscray plantings
    • Pedestrian and cycling initiatives
    • Footpath maintenance and upgrades
    • Festival City funding for events
    • Footscray marketing program
    • Parking guidance signage

  11. Do the council staff ever actually leave their offices and walk around Footscray? If they do, do they open their eyes? Footscray is DEAD. Highpoint has killed it. If you want shopping you go to Highpoint. If you want a coffee you go to Seddon or Yarraville. There is nothing in Footscray but Vietnamese and Ethiopian cafes, $2 shops, and unemployed drug addicts! Why don't you try cleaning the place up first, and encouraging people BACK to Footscray instead of just scaring more people away with even stricter parking regulations. I only go to the Vietnamese restaurants after hours and refuse to pay for parking. Parking at Seddon, Yarraville & Highpoint is free, as it should be in Footscray. A 2 hour limit is fine in the main shopping strip. Also, I would get rid of any seating in the mall, or just open it back up as a road. It currently only attracts the unemployed.

  12. It should be the same as it is in Seddon, Yarraville or at Highpoint. Give everyone a go! You need to attract people to Footscray not scare them off. I no longer go to Chemist Warehouse in Barkly Street thanks to the parking meters. I now go to the one in Maidstone. Will you be putting meters there too now?

  13. Increase fees and lower times in residential streets close to shopping centre.Force shoppers to use dedicated car parks etc.
Residents have to pay for permits but cannot be guaranteed a spot. With 7 day a week shopping and increased numbers of festivals etc it is impossible to park at home. And before anyone says we chose to live here, we chose over 20 years ago when it was not such an issue.

  14. I don't have any objection to parking meters and don't bother trying to find a spot as it is madness particularly on a Saturday. I walk instead.
What I am not happy about is all those drivers who don't want to pay for parking so move further into residential streets - like mine, Lynch Street. We have restricted parking and resident stickers but noone seems to fine those who park illegally now. I often have trouble parking anywhere near my house because of the Saturday market shoppers. I see them returning to their cars with trolleys loaded from the market.
What is going to be done to ensure that even more drivers don't try to avoid the payment for parking and clog up my street and others nearby? The local residents need to be able to park near their houses.

  15. sadly it doesnt matter what the public says, you will look for ways to make revenue. The big loosers are the shop owners I havent and wont shop in the Footscray CBD because of your laws. Council projects dont help any one, them big cane baskets such an eyesore

  16. Re the cane baskets, I actually really like them. It's one of the only things the council has done that is appealing in Footscray. Definitely get rid of the seats in the mall, or as suggested above open it back up as a street. You have spent a fortune on pretty seating for the unemployed druggies and I'm sure they're really appreciative of having somewhere to do their deals.

  17. There is a definite need for more 2 hour or free parking close to the TAFE. Currently we only have the Paint Spot car park. Once the parking in Raleigh Street disappears with the regional rail link it is going to be a nightmare finding parking. Most students can't afford $5+ a day for parking. Rate paying residents should receive a parking permit sticker for their cars so they don't have to pay.

  18. I need to confirm Beths point of view July 11 - 5:03pm) around nearyby residential parking and the spillover effects of implementing paid parking in Footscray. There comes a point where people will not pay for parking and flood the surrounding areas that are free parking. Living in Bunbury Street is now a nightmare. Not only do we have to contend with the street being turned into a bus depot due to the transport construction works, there is also minimal parking across the week and weekends for residents to park. It really becomes frustrating on weekends when you need to find space to park, very rarely can i now access my own spot out of the front of my property. Strategies need to be developed that provide support to residents that live in the surrounding areas of the Footscray Business District as increasing the amount of paid parking will further add crisis to the problem. Please consider and i would be interested to see planning around the care and concern of nearby residents and considering their needs!! Why can't there be Permit Parking only and keep this street to residents only??

  19. Parking should be at least 2 hours unless you want people to only eat OR shop in Footscray but not both. I tried to do both and had to feed the meter in between but still got a fine for exceeding the time limit. I can only assume it's because the total time was more than 1 hour as there was plenty of time left in the meter.
