Footscray Proposed Paid Parking

Footscray is one of the busiest inner city suburbs as a growing number of people choose to live, study, work and visit in the area. It can often be difficult to find parking.

Council is proposing to introduce more pay parking to central Footscray as we believe it will increase turnover of parking spots which will contribute to more people visiting and shopping in Footscray CBD. Parking studies here and overseas have confirmed that this model works. It has led to a fairer system as more short-term parking is created which also decreases double-parking and time spent looking for a parking space.

While we would like to implement more pay parking in Footscray, Council also wants to ensure any concerns the community and local businesses have are addressed as we do not want anyone to be disadvantaged by the changes.

Community Consultation
A number of strategies were used in June and July to collect community input about this issue including distribution of factsheets , visiting businesses and organisations, as well as online conversatuions and advertising. Council received 101 responses and two petitions and we would like to thank all who provided their valuable feedback on this issue. The online blog attracted 70 comments and these can still be read.
Next Step
All comments received during the consultation period will be collated and considered by Councillors at the Ordinary Council Meeting (open to the public) on Tuesday 16 August 2011.
